Senior Investment Manager – Energy Transition (Japan)

Overview
A global renewable energy investment platform is seeking a Senior Investment Manager to lead origination and strategic partnerships in Japan. This role will drive market engagement, identify new opportunities across renewables and storage, and act as a bridge between Japan’s energy ecosystem and global investment teams.

The ideal candidate brings strong networks, a relationship-led approach, and the ability to translate early discussions into actionable partnerships that advance Japan’s energy transition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Source and originate investment and partnership opportunities across renewables, distributed energy, storage, and broader transition themes.
  • Build, deepen, and maintain relationships with developers, EPCs, utilities, trading houses, corporates, and financial institutions.
  • Lead Japan-focused partner and LP engagement programs, including roadshows and strategic dialogues.
  • Support early commercial negotiations and deal evaluations alongside APAC and global investment teams.
  • Serve as a communication and cultural bridge between Tokyo and international stakeholders.

Ideal Background

  • 10-15 years in investment banking (M&A), private equity, corporate development, or strategic business development within energy or infrastructure.
  • Proven origination track record and credibility in relationship-driven environments.
  • Strong understanding of decision-making within Japanese utilities, trading houses, and corporates.
  • Experience with renewable project development cycles or partnership structuring preferred.

Core Competencies

  • Networked: Established senior and mid-level relationships within Japan’s energy ecosystem.
  • Commercially sharp: Able to qualify opportunities and guide conversations to outcomes.
  • Culturally fluent: Navigates Japanese corporate dynamics while communicating effectively with global teams.
  • Organized & persistent: Maintains structured deal flow and stakeholder engagement over long time horizons.
  • Excellent communicator: Native Japanese and strong business English.

Who You Are

  • Trusted and well-regarded in the market — “someone people call first.”
  • Experienced in shaping early-stage partnerships or deals.
  • Collaborative, humble, and genuinely motivated by the energy transition.
  • Comfortable operating in a lean, entrepreneurial environment.

Not a Fit

  • Policy or consulting backgrounds without hands-on deal or partnership execution.
  • Junior bankers lacking independent relationship credibility.
  • Highly transactional profiles with limited long-cycle relationship experience.

Compensation
Competitive base salary + performance bonus, with potential for long-term incentive alignment.
