On behalf of our prestigious client, a leading international energy company, we are seeking an exceptional Legal Counsel to join their APAC legal team, supporting energy trading and low carbon business initiatives across Japan. The position can be based in either Singapore or Tokyo. 
  
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of the energy transition, providing legal support for complex transactions, strategic initiatives, and day-to-day trading operations.
  
Key Responsibilities

• Structure and negotiate complex transaction documentation including financing and offtake arrangements
• Provide day-to-day legal support for trading activities across Japan
• Advise on new projects and strategic initiatives, including expansion into emerging low carbon markets
• Collaborate effectively with regional legal teams and external counsel
• Work independently with business stakeholders while maintaining appropriate escalation protocols

What We’re Looking For
  
Essential:

• Pragmatic approach with focus on commercial and practical solutions
• Ability to prioritize competing demands and work effectively under tight deadlines
• Excellent communication skills with ability to explain complex legal issues clearly
• Experience working across international legal regimes
• Strong team player with proven relationship-building skills
• Demonstrated integrity and sound ethical judgment

Highly Desirable:

• Oil and gas commodity trading experience with understanding of the Japanese market dynamics
• M&A experience from top-tier international law firm
• Knowledge of carbon markets and energy transition sectors
• Japanese language capabilities
• Significant post-qualification (at least 6 years) experience in private practice and/or in-house roles
