Legal Counsel - Japanese Energy Trading
About the job
A fast-growing, energy trading company is hiring a Legal Counsel to be based in Singapore, supporting its Japanese trading business.
The company has grown its APAC headcount significantly over the past year and continues to scale. This is a broad in-house role for a lawyer who wants genuine autonomy and the chance to help build out legal support for the business as it grows.
The role reports directly to the Head of Legal, APAC
What You’ll Do
- Provide legal support to the company’s Japanese trading business, working closely with local and regional stakeholders
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial and trading-related agreements
- Advise the business on regulatory and compliance matters relevant to the Japanese market
- Support the Head of Legal and Compliance on broader legal and governance matters across APAC
- Liaise with external counsel in Japan and other jurisdictions
- Help shape legal processes and documentation as the Japan business and wider APAC team grow
What You’ll Bring
- At least 7 years’ post-qualification experience, in-house and/or private practice
- Fluency in Japanese is essential; professional English required
- Direct energy or commodities trading experience is not required – exposure to commercial contracts, trading agreements, or a regulated industry is a plus
- Comfortable in a lean, fast-growing organisation with a hands-on, autonomous style
- Strong stakeholder management skills across Japanese and international teams
- Based in, or willing to relocate to, Singapore
