Our client, a leading global energy company, is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to support their LNG Trading & Shipping business in Asia. This role will be part of a global legal team supporting energy marketing, operations, and trading activities.Role Overview: Support a recognized global LNG player with an extensive portfolio and significant marketing and trading capabilities. The position will focus on providing specialist legal support to the LNG Trading business in Asia, handling term acquisitions, term sales, short-term trading activities, and related structured products in the region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review, draft, negotiate and interpret key agreements including complex term LNG sale and purchase agreements, master trading agreements, and infrastructure project documentation
- Provide structuring advice and compliance guidance for LNG trading activity
- Advise on contract implementation and operational events (force majeure, cargo scheduling, credit support, etc.)
- Support disputes and contractual claims in collaboration with the dispute resolution team
- Manage material risks and communicate them to relevant stakeholders
- Contribute to legal know-how and improvement of contracting procedures
- Collaborate with Ethics & Compliance team to ensure effective implementation of compliance agenda
- Work with global LNG legal team members and other subject matter experts
Qualifications:
- Strong experience in LNG transactions with excellent client advisory and negotiation skills
- Confident application of US/UK contract law principles relevant to the energy industry
- Proven commercial awareness and effective contribution to business results
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work collaboratively across teams and geographies
- Experience advising on multiple complex, high-value transactions in time-sensitive situations
- Self-motivated with a solution-oriented approach
- Experience in international commodity trading, including master agreements and confirmations
- Background in energy disputes and LNG/gas related projects preferred
- Knowledge of relevant compliance law (competition/antitrust, sanctions, anti-bribery)
- Experience working in Asia Pacific and/or Middle East region desirable
Requirements:
- Law degree or equivalent applicable post-graduate legal qualification
- At least 6+ years of post-qualification experience within a global corporation and/or major international law firm.
- Strong leadership, communication, and time management skills.
- A friendly and approachable manner with demonstrated ability to develop strong commercial relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
